The Red Room
The Red Room is a very mysterious room. Both
Hooper and Kingshaw are curious to know what is in it, however Hooper enjoys the contents of the Red Room and wants to return, while Kingshaw is absolutely horrified by the moths and the intimidating sense in the room. The dark red colour of the room symbolises blood, death, suffering and pain; it could be seen as the blood of all the dead, stuffed animals in the room.
The dead animals give an eerie sense, making the room very creepy and making Kingshaw afraid of it and the moths in it. "... the stuffed bodies of weasels, stoat, and fox, glass-eyed and posed in stilted attitudes." p19. The "stuffed bodies" and "stilted attitudes" emphasise the forced, uncomfortable position in which the animals are posed.
The view of the window onto the yew trees doesn't help the creepy feeling of the Red Room, "He could see the shadows of the yew trees, tossing in the wind. He thought suddenly of the figures of men, hiding out there, watching him." p53, the shadows of the trees are playing tricks on Kingshaw's mind, and making him hallucinate slightly. The men "hiding out there, watching him", are just thoughts of fear, as if the shadows wants to hurt him. "The yew trees, tossing in the wind" give moving shadows, which also look more like humans.
The Red Room is an eerie place, with walls painted a bold red. The red symolises blood, death, suffering and pain. All the stuffed animals give a sense of forced and uncomfortable attitudes. The yew trees cast creepy shadows, that resemble people.
